Firman a primera mujer para jugar en la Doble A
Mañana será un día histórico en el béisbol Superior Doble A cuando la Federación de Béisbol haga el anuncio de la entrada a juego de la primera mujer al deporte que, en 80 años, ha sido exclusivamente de hombres.
Según conoció Primera Hora y pudo confirmar por varias fuentes que prefirieron mantener sus nombres en el anonimato, ese día los Montañeses de Utuado anunciarán la firma de la primera base y miembro del Equipo Nacional de Béisbol Femenino, Diamilette Quiles, para jugar durante el fin de semana en el último desafío de temporada regular para esta novena.
La campaña, de hecho, cierra este domingo y Quiles no será elegible para jugar en dicha fase.
Una de las fuentes consultadas confirmó que la firma no encontró objeción en la directiva de la Doble A y que el organismo programó para este jueves un conferencia de prensa para dar el anuncio de manera oficial.
Será la tercera liga masculina de Puerto Rico que abra paso a una mujer en su torneo.
La pionera fue la liga Coliceba de béisbol, la que tuvo activa a Wanda Maldonado con los Llaneros de Toa Baja durante un periodo de juego durante los años 80.
Luego en la década de 1990, la extinta Liga Puertorriqueña de Baloncesto rompió la barrera del género permitiendo la participación de Alexandra Osorio con los Ganadores de Hatillo.
En ese momento la Federación de Baloncesto de Puerto Rico prohibió su participación, pero eventualmente se vio forzada a aceptarla cuando una orden de la juez Carmen Rita Vélez Borrás declaró la objeción federativa como un caso de discriminación sexual.
Natural de Utuado, Quiles lleva 10 años activas en la Liga Superior de Béisbol Femenina con las Lobas de Arecibo, en cuyo periodo ese equipo ha conquistado nueve campeonatos.
Mientras, Quiles forma parte del Equipo Nacional de Béisbol desde su fundación en el 2009.
Ha participado al día de hoy en dos Copas Mundiales y fue parte del equipo que conquistó la cuarta posición en los Panamericanos Toronto 2015.
El debut de Quiles con los Montañeses será este domingo, a las 11:30 a.m. en el estadio Ramón Cabañas de Utuado, cuando reciban la visita de los Patrulleros de San Sebastián del Pepino.
