EX-PRESIDENTE LUIS IGNACIO LULA DESISTIÓ BUSCAR LA PRESIDENCIA

El expresidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva desistió de disputar la Presidencia en las elecciones del 7 de octubre próximo y anunció a su exministro Fernando Haddad, que era compañero de fórmula como candidato a vicepresidente, como el nuevo abanderado del Partido de los Trabajadores (PT).
La decisión de Lula fue comunicada a la dirección del PT en la ciudad de Curitiba, en donde el expresidente comenzó a purgar desde abril su condena de 12 años de prisión, y se produjo en el último día de plazo que la formación tenía para anunciar a su nuevo candidato presidencial tras la decisión del Tribunal Superior Electoral de inhabilitar al expresidente.
Antes de la conclusión de la reunión de la dirección del partido en Curitiba para refrendar la decisión de su máximo líder, el PT divulgó un anuncio en televisión en el que dejó claro que las aspiraciones de Haddad como candidato a la Presidencia contaban con el apoyo de Lula.
Pese a que la cita partidaria tenía previsto hacer el anuncio en la tarde de este martes en un acto en Curitiba, fuentes del partido anticiparon la decisión pero aclararon que el anuncio oficial sólo será hecho en un evento previsto al frente de la edificación policial en la que Lula está preso.
La mayor formación de izquierda de América Latina y que gobernó Brasil por 13 años (2003-2016) esperó hasta el último momento para anunciar el cambio de candidato con la esperanza de poder revertir la decisión de la justicia electoral en otras instancias.
Sin embargo ni el Tribunal Superior Electoral ni la Corte Suprema de Justicia llegaron a pronunciarse sobre los diferentes recursos que el PT presentó en la última semana para intentar habilitar a Lula como candidato.
Lula fue vetado de disputar las elecciones en base a una ley que él mismo sancionó y que impide expresamente que candidatos condenados en segunda instancia, como es su caso, puedan postular a un cargo electivo.
El tribunal electoral había advertido de que en caso de que no presentase un nuevo candidato hasta este martes, el PT quedaría por fuera de la disputa presidencial.
Lula encabezaba todas las encuestas de intención de voto, con cerca del 40 % del favoritismo, y era señalado por los sondeos como el más posible vencedor tanto de la primera vuelta como de la segunda frente a cualquiera de sus adversarios.
Con la aún elevada popularidad del que aún es considerado como presidente más carismático de Brasil pese a su prisión y su condena por corrupción, el PT insistió en su candidatura y negó que tuviese un plan alternativo.
Haddad, que fue ministro de Educación en el Gobierno de Lula y alcalde de Sao Paulo, es el quinto ubicado en los últimos sondeos de intención de voto, con un 9 %, cinco puntos porcentuales a más que los que tenía en agosto.
A menos de un mes para los comicios más inciertos en las últimas décadas en Brasil, Haddad confía en la transferencia de votos de su padrino político.
Las encuestas las lidera el ultraderechista Jair Bolsonaro (24 %), hospitalizado después de ser apuñalado la semana pasada durante un mitin, a quien escoltan el laborista Ciro Gomes (13 %), la ecologista Marina Silva (11 %) y el socialdemócrata Geraldo Alckmin (10 %).
En cualquier caso, esos resultados llevarían el pleito a una segunda vuelta, que sería celebrada el 28 de octubre y en la que, según los sondeos, Bolsonaro perdería contra Gomes, Silva o Alckmin, y estaría prácticamente empatado con Haddad.
